Carnations Indian Wedding Garlands in Australia

Jaymala is one of the ceremonies performed during an Indian Wedding which involves the bride and groom exchanging flower garlands. It also signifies the couple’s acceptance of one another as husband and wife.

One of the most popular types of Indian Wedding garlands are made from the fragrant jasmine flower.

Certain species of the Genus Jasminum flowers have a heady and exotic scent used to capture, sustain or rekindle the affections of a loved one.

In the long hot summer months in India the exquisitely scented, star-shaped white, flowers open at night during the full moon when the aroma is most intense and is plucked in the morning when the tiny petals are tightly closed.

In the Southern parts of India, women wear a string of jasmine flowers in their hair and jasmine flowers are popularly threaded together into a necklace. The flowers can be threaded using gold or silver coloured string.

Whilst Jasmine is not a flower that is in season during the summer months of the year in Australia there is however access to a type of jasmine flower which is available in June.

So what are some of the alternative types of wedding garlands that South Asian brides and grooms can have access to in Australia?

Carnations and Chrysanthemums are in season all year round and are the more common types of flower garlands used in Indian style wedding ceremonies in Australia.

Carnation wedding garlands are the ones that last the longest.

Marigolds can be an alternative if sourced from local flower farms.

The cost of a pair of Indian wedding garlands normally range from $150-$200 AUD however this cost can rise based on the type of flower used and the volume of flowers used.

Roses are generally four (4) times more expensive than other flowers and require needling rather than threading. Although rose garlands are beautiful and available in different colours, yellow, pink, white and red, they have a slight tendency to get ruined when they rub against the wedding garments. However, roses are still widely available and a popular choice.
