Ben_lee_and_ione_skye_wedding_2 Ben Lee on his Indian Wedding ceremony

Australian Indian Weddings caught up with Australian Singer/ Songwriter Ben Lee and asked him about his Indian Wedding experience.

1. Hi Ben! How was the experience of an Indian Wedding and one presided over by Sakthi Narayani Amma?

Ben Lee: We (Ione and I) both think of marriage as a spiritual commitment, and it was our wish to be married by Amma. He has had a tremendous impact on our lives and it felt like the perfect way to enter into the next stage of our relationship. It was very magical.

2. Where did Ione purchase her wedding sari?

Ben Lee: Ione’s sari was actually purchased at the Sri Puram (Amma’s Golden temple) in Vellore. She chose three different saris and asked Amma to choose and bless the one she would wear the day before the wedding.

3. How was Ione’s mehendi experience?

Ben Lee: Ione had a really bad cold so it wasn’t easy to sit for 7 hours when she wanted to be sleeping. But she found the experience very bonding with all the women in the room. It was like a bridal shower.

4. Why was the wedding held in Malaikodi, Chennai? Was it for the spiritual experience alone?

Ben Lee: We are there a couple of times each year to be with Amma, attend poojas and do Seva (Seva in Sanskrit translates to service). Amma’s peedam has become something of a home away from home for us.

5. Where did you honeymoon?

Ben Lee: We had to get back to LA quickly as Kate (Ione’s daughter) had to go back to school. So we took our honeymoon just this month! Ione met me on tour in Europe and we spent 5 days in Paris, then picked up Kate in LA and went to Maui, Hawaii for a week. Worth waiting for!

6. What was it like to wear the Indian Dress?

Ben Lee: The turban was incredibly tight. I remember feeling the blood to my head being cut off a bit. But overall the sense of euphoria was so great that I didn’t notice a whole lot!
