The aqua and gold coloured dupatta draped around her face and flowing by her side revealed a more traditional side of the Indian tennis sensation. This was a far cry from the hysteria created a number of years ago by Orthodox Muslims in India accusing her of wearing skimpy outfits when playing tennis.
Sania Mirza looked like a Mughal princess with the stunning choker around her neck. Underneath the dupatta, her dark brown locks spiralled down her shoulders and her kohl-pencilled eyes looked seductively dark aganst the lighter shades used in her bridal make-up.
The colours of the engagement outfit were chosen by Sania to match the colour of her family jewels.
For three generations, the women in the family have worn this choker passing the jewels to the next generation.
”We’ve had this choker in our family for 75 years, emerald set in dull gold. It is my mother’s. Before her, it was my dadi’s (grandmothers) and I wanted to wear it.” Sania said.
Sohrab, a Hyderabadi businessman, looked handsomely dressed for the occasion in a stylish black Armani suit and an emerald tie matching the colour of his fiancee’s outfit with emerald stones encrusted in the lehenga choli and the jewelled choker.
His chiselled jawline combined with his dark good looks added to his appeal as he smiled proudly beside his companion.
The engagement ceremony was marked by Islamic tradition with the couple exchanging flower garlands.
Sohrab presented Sania with a 2-carat diamond solitaire ring, infront of 300 family and friends who witnessed the special occasion at the 5 star luxury hotel in Hyderabad.
Sania’s hands were stained with intricate mehendi designs throughout the engagement cermony and the diamond ring complemented the stunning Maangtika that hung from her forehead.
Sania is certainly no stranger to expensive jewellery. In the South of India a few years ago, she was well known as a brand ambassador for Malabar Gold, one of the large gold retail chains in the South.
Sania Mirza is an international role model to fans around the world. The couple are expected to wed in two years.
